Best Places to Visit in the Amalfi Coast: Capri

This small island off the coast of the Sorrentine Peninsula has rugged cliffs, rich greenery, and a heartwarming, touristy atmosphere.

The easiest way to reach Capri is by taking a ferry from the port of Sorrento, which takes about 30-40 minutes. Be sure to enjoy the island in these three spots:

1. Capri Town Center

After disembarking the ferry at the port of Capri, take the funicular (cable car) up to the center of the island.

Here you can browse through amazing gift shops selling limoncello, handmade leather sandals, and ocean-themed souvenirs.

Indulge in fresh pasta for lunch and try a granita from any of the street stands.

These are slushies made with freshly squeezed blood oranges and lemons, and they are perfect on a hot day.

2. Anacapri

Anacapri is a comune located on the very top of the island.

Take a public bus from the center of Capri up to Anacapri, then take the chairlift up to the highest point.

While on the 10-minute chairlift ride, you’ll get to see Capri from above and glide through the green forests of the island.

Upon reaching the very top, you can look over the misty blue ocean and surrounding islands.

3. Boat Tour from Capri

Take a boat tour of Capri to see the island’s incredible rock formations up close.

There are tons of boat tour companies in Capri’s port where you can book a journey through the Tyrrhenian Sea and around the island.

You will make a stop at the famous Blue Grotto, where you can board small rowboats and enter this mysterious cave filled with shockingly blue water.

I recommend this boat tour from Get Your Guide that costs only $25!

Best Places to Visit in the Amalfi Coast: Positano

The town of Positano on the Amalfi Coast is perfect for a picturesque beach day.

Here are two ways to take in the views of this charming village.

1. The Road To Positano

Positano is set on the edge of a cliff, so the drive from Sorrento or other neighboring towns is like a roller coaster.

While appreciating the skill of the drivers who whiz down these narrow winding roads with ease, take in the surrounding sights of the rich blue ocean, jagged rock walls, and cliffside fruit stands.

Once you get into the heart of Positano, the cobblestone streets are packed with shops, cafes, and boutiques.

Be sure to browse through the amazing artwork and gorgeous handmade clothing.

2. Positano Beach

Once you arrive at Positano Beach, lay in the soft black sand and swim in the cold and refreshingly clear ocean.

The sand transitions into large pebbles closer to the water, so be sure to have sandals to protect your feet.

With the towering cliffs smothered in beautiful buildings as your background, you can easily enjoy the beach for hours on end.

Positano Beach is one of the most gorgeous places to visit in the Amalfi Coast.

Best Places to Visit in the Amalfi Coast: Mount Vesuvius

Located in Campania, Italy, the volcano of Mount Vesuvius is an incredible natural landmark on the Amalfi Coast.

Fully explore the majesty of the mountain from these two places.

1. Hike Mount Vesuvius

Hiking Mount Vesuvius only takes about 30 minutes, and the easy climb has only a moderate incline.

Follow the dusty path while looking out at the city of Naples and the ocean in the distance.

The panoramic view is wonderful from the top, and peering into the pit of the still-active volcano feels surreal.

2. Visit Pompeii

Vesuvius’s most famous eruption occurred in AD 79, and the volcanic ash destroyed the ancient Roman city of Pompeii.

You can still visit the ruins of Pompeii and learn about the society and infrastructure that once thrived there.

Archeologists have done a fantastic job of uncovering remnants of the ancient civilization.

They even have plaster molds on display that show the actual size and position of people who died in the eruption.

It is a heartbreaking but fascinating story, and the distant outline of Mount Vesuvius behind Pompeii adds a sense of eeriness.

If you want to learn as much as possible about the history of Pompeii, I recommend booking a group tour with an archeologist who can teach you everything you want to know.

How to get around the Amalfi Coast

If you want to book your own public transport, check Bookaway, Omio, or Rome2Rio to compare transport prices and find the cheapest option.

If you don’t want to deal with the hassle of booking all your own transport, you can book a tour.

I personally visited all these Amalfi Coast attractions while working as a tour guide for Smart Trip.

I learned that doing a tour is actually way easier and almost exactly the same price as doing everything on your own.

So even though I’m an avid budget traveler, I actually think it is worth booking a tour in this situation.

Sometimes the all-inclusive tours on Get Your Guide are just as affordable as buying your own transport separately.
